Lotus Car Rental serves Keflavik Airport from Flugvellir 6, 230 Keflavik, with a free shuttle between the terminal and office. The most useful comparison is the total rental plus protection and deposit requirements, not a headline daily rate. A zero insurance excess is different from permission to use every road or from free recovery in every situation.

Protection packages and separate recovery cover

PackagePublished damage excessMain distinctions listed on insurance page
SilverISK 150,000Third-party liability, SCDW, theft protection
GoldISK 65,000Adds gravel and sand/ash protection
PlatinumISK 0Adds listed tire, river-crossing, F-road and animal-damage protection plus self-service option
Roadside Protection PremiumSeparate optional add-onCallout/recovery categories such as flat tires, keys, fuel and battery

The insurance page advertises Roadside Protection Premium at ISK 1,400 per day and says it can be added to any tier. That separation matters: buying Platinum should not automatically be read as buying every roadside callout benefit. Check both damage liability and recovery/assistance when comparing the complete quote.

Third-party cover, CDW/SCDW and theft protection are listed in the default Silver offering. If using a credit-card insurer or another external policy, Lotus says you pay it for the damage first and then seek reimbursement from your own provider. External cover therefore may not eliminate the cash-flow or deposit requirement at collection.

These are the operator's package descriptions, not an independent insurance recommendation. Exclusions and permitted use remain in the agreement. Do not choose cover solely from a zero in an excess column.

Debit cards, credit cards and deposits

The agreement describes a debit-card imprint and deposit linked to the selected protection. Platinum is listed with no deposit, Gold ISK 65,000, Silver ISK 150,000. Declining all optional protection requires ISK 500,000 at pickup, including when using a credit card. Credit-card rentals otherwise use an imprint for security under the terms.

Ask how your specific card will be accepted and how a deposit is processed/released. The agreement says release follows vehicle inspection and settlement of any damage, fines or other charges; it does not guarantee immediate availability of funds in your bank account. Paying the rental in advance or presenting a voucher does not remove all pickup security requirements.

If you intend to decline optional cover because another policy reimburses you, compare that decision with the ISK 500,000 deposit and exclusions before traveling. A payment method accepted for online booking is not necessarily the complete documentation needed at collection.

Driver eligibility and permitted roads

The terms normally require a licence held for twelve months. Smaller/medium vehicles and the named Dacia Duster/RAV4 roof-tent models have a stated minimum age of twenty. Large/luxury vehicles, nine-seat vans, California models and Hilux campers are listed at twenty-three. A Young Driver Fee is mentioned for exceptions, but the retrieved text does not establish every permitted younger-age combination. Confirm the actual vehicle before assuming payment of a fee makes you eligible.

Only vehicles explicitly authorized by Lotus may use F-roads. The agreement excludes two-wheel-drive vehicles, nine-seat vans and electric vehicles from all F-roads. It also expressly prohibits crossing the Krossa river on F249 in any vehicle. Platinum's river-crossing cover does not override that prohibition.

Off-road or otherwise prohibited driving remains excluded. Plan using the selected vehicle's authorization and road conditions, not a generic 4 x 4 label. Report faults, damage or malfunctions promptly and follow the operator's accident instructions rather than arranging unauthorized repairs.

Airport collection and self-service

The site advertises a free KEF shuttle and an approximately five-minute ride. Allow additional time for baggage, walking, waiting and signing/checking the vehicle. The homepage pickup FAQ exposed questions without answers. The separately reviewed dedicated shuttle page below now establishes a meeting route, stop number and request procedure; it does not establish staffed pickup at all hours.

Platinum lists online check-in and a self-service option. Confirm eligibility, deadline, key location and out-of-hours assistance directly for your booking. A listed self-service benefit is not proof that an incomplete booking can be collected at any time.

Cancellation and a delayed flight

The dedicated cancellation page says cancellations at least 24 hours before pickup receive a full refund. Inside 24 hours, prepaid bookings can receive a voucher for the full booking amount rather than a monetary refund. It explicitly includes flight cancellations due to weather or airline decisions.

The full agreement adds newer no-show language for bookings from June 23, 2026: a paid booking may be forfeited 24 hours after pickup if the vehicle is not collected and Lotus has not been contacted; an unpaid reservation can be cancelled after six hours without notice of a delay. Notify the operator promptly rather than assuming flight disruption automatically preserves the car.

The shorter policy page prints its applicability date as "3/2/2025", while the full agreement includes the newer 23 June 2026 date. The ambiguous numeric date is not silently converted to one month/day convention. Keep the applicable version and confirmation for your rate. This listing does not replace a disputed contract interpretation.

Returning the car

The current agreement says late returns exceeding one hour can trigger another day's charge. Fuel vehicles should be returned full; electric vehicles are described with a minimum 50% return charge. Check the selected vehicle's exact instructions and fees before your final driving day.

Early return does not automatically produce a refund: the terms require advance notice under their stated timing. Return to the booked office, leave room for inspection and the airport shuttle, and preserve condition photographs for your own records.

Frequently asked questions

Does Platinum permit every river crossing?

No. Permitted vehicle/road rules still apply, and Krossa on F249 is expressly prohibited.

Is roadside recovery included in every package?

The insurance page sells Roadside Protection Premium separately, so check it independently of damage excess.

Can a prepaid renter still need a deposit?

Yes. Card and protection choice govern pickup security even when the rental price has already been paid.

Will a last-minute flight cancellation bring a cash refund?

The published policy describes a voucher for prepaid cancellations inside 24 hours rather than cash.

Airport shuttle and staffed hours: fresh source review

The operator's dedicated Keflavik page now supplies a concrete collection route: follow its tunnel directions to the official rental-shuttle stop, then leave the shared bus at stop 4 for the Lotus-logo office. Before 18:00 it describes departures roughly every 15-25 minutes without booking; after 18:00 request pickup through shuttle.lotuscarrental.is or call +354 787 4444, option 1. Call that number/option if the shuttle has not appeared after 20 minutes. These are operator instructions, not a guarantee of a bus or a flight-connection time. Official airport-shuttle page.

Published office hours are 05:00-02:00 from June through October and 05:00-01:00 from November through May. The site separately advertises 24-hour breakdown assistance; that is not 24-hour staffed collection or a shuttle outside office hours. Confirm self-service eligibility and the actual collection deadline for your booking. The contact body uses Flugvellir 6 while its footer uses 6-10; follow the Lotus reporting instructions rather than infer two separate offices. Current contact and office information.

The current agreement also describes an operator-collected ISK 1,550 daily road-tax/admin charge, included in the rental price for bookings after its stated 23 December 2025 cutoff and collected separately for earlier bookings. Ask whether it is already in your quoted total; this is a description of the operator's charge, not independent advice on Icelandic tax law. Declining optional damage protection and buying roadside recovery remain different decisions. Agreement and fee wording.
