Happy Campers: choose the van, then check the route

Happy Campers is a campervan rental operator based at Stapabraut 21 in Reykjanesbaer, near Keflavik Airport. It combines transport and sleeping space, with small two-person vans, larger five-person models and selected 4 x 4 categories. The practical choice is not simply the lowest daily rate: compare legal passenger seats, actual sleeping capacity, route permission, insurance and pickup timing together. Official fleet Rental terms

Happy 2 EX42AutomaticFour seats do not mean four beds
Happy 3 EX55AutomaticOlder-model larger van
Happy 4 x 4 EX42AutomaticFour seats, two sleeping places

These are operator-listed categories, not a guarantee of a specific vehicle make. EX denotes older fleet models; compare the individual vehicle specification rather than assuming EX includes every feature of a newer van. The seat-versus-bed distinction is especially important when booking for a family. Fleet and inclusions FAQ

What the rental includes - and what to budget separately

The published base package includes unlimited kilometres, VAT, basic collision damage waiver, third-party liability cover, bedding and cooking/eating equipment. The vans do not have built-in toilets or showers; a portable toilet is an optional extra. That means your overnight planning must include suitable facilities instead of treating the van as a fully self-contained motorhome. FAQ

Unlimited WiFi is included with standard vans; the current EX add-on is EUR 10 per day. The homepage lists an extra driver at EUR 35 per rental, a camping chair at EUR 15 per rental and a table at EUR 20 per rental. These are equipment/driver charges, not nightly campsite costs. The FAQ additionally lists a separate EUR 11 daily road-usage charge in booking. Compare the final dated quote, including road charge, insurance, extras, fuel and overnight facilities, rather than the advertised base rate. Extras FAQ

The minimum charged rental is 72 hours. Drivers must be at least 18 and, under the October 2026 terms, have held a valid licence for at least 12 months. Bring the physical licence; an international driving permit is required where the licence is not in Latin script. Every driver must be approved and included on the rental agreement. Terms FAQ

Airport pickup is not an all-night service

The free shuttle serves Keflavik Airport and the greater Keflavik/Reykjanesbaer area; it does not collect in Reykjavik. Arrival details should be submitted at least 24 hours ahead. The published winter office window is 08:00-17:00, and pickup is available only during office opening hours. The shuttle page still labels its summer schedule "Summer 2025", so confirm your actual collection appointment rather than extending that date label to future summers. Christmas and New Year closures are listed on that page. Airport shuttle

At the airport, the operator instructs passengers to meet in arrivals after baggage claim and customs, near the exit opposite the Flybus kiosk. Allow roughly 30 minutes at the office for paperwork and vehicle orientation, according to the shuttle FAQ. If your flight lands after the last shuttle, arranging a local overnight stay may be necessary. Do not assume the van will be delivered to the terminal or Reykjavik. Collection instructions

24/7 vehicle dropoff does not mean a 24/7 airport shuttle. After-hours returns are offered, but onward airport transport outside shuttle hours needs a separate plan. The terms also retain renter responsibility until the return is registered/inspected. Photograph the vehicle, follow the supplied key-return instructions and allow time for a separate transfer when returning overnight. Shuttle and dropoff Return terms

Insurance, card holds and route restrictions

TopicPublished positionWhat to verify before paying
Basic CDWEUR 3,000 self-riskWhether your likely damage type is covered
Standard / Plus / MaxPaid upgrades with different deductiblesWritten damage-by-damage coverage table
Roadside ProtectionSeparate add-on or included in named bundlesTowing/rescue coverage and misuse exclusions
Credit-card security holdEUR 300; waived with Max under the termsCard in renter's name and available limit
Debit/prepaid securityEUR 300 with Plus/Max; otherwise applicable deductibleWritten confirmation for your exact card

Water and underbody damage remain excluded even at the highest advertised tier. "Zero deductible" therefore does not mean every loss is covered. The insurance sales page and terms describe some tier details differently, so request the current insurance guide attached to your agreement. The terms distinguish free access to an emergency coordination line from actually paying recovery costs. Insurance Terms

Only approved 4 x 4 vehicles may use permitted open F-roads; a 2 WD booking is not suitable for those routes. The FAQ names additional prohibited roads even for 4 x 4 s. Show the company your exact route, including road numbers and proposed river crossings, and obtain the applicable restrictions before selecting a vehicle. A 4 x 4 badge does not remove road closures or water-damage exclusions. Route FAQ Terms

Cancellation and return checklist

The October 2026 terms provide a full refund when cancellation is more than 24 hours before scheduled pickup. Inside 24 hours, or if required documentation is missing, the stated charge is the full confirmation fee. The confirmation payment is 30% of rental charges. Early return does not create a refund entitlement. Return full of fuel, with all equipment and reasonably clean; document any existing damage at collection. Terms

Frequently asked questions

Can four people sleep in a four-seat EX van? Not necessarily. Happy 2 EX and Happy 4 x 4 EX each list four passenger seats but only two sleeping places. Book against both figures. Fleet

Can I use a debit card? The terms accept debit/prepaid cards but vary the security hold by coverage tier. Because the same clause also refers to a credit card at pickup, obtain written confirmation for your card before travelling. Terms

Can I collect late at night? No routine after-hours pickup is published. Collection requires office opening hours, even though after-hours return is available. Shuttle FAQ

Does buying Max cover river damage? No. Water and underbody exclusions remain in the operator's published terms. Insurance and exclusions

Researched from operator pages on 1 November 2026. Rates and available vehicles depend on dates; the signed agreement and current quote should be checked before booking.

Card type, Max cover and the deposit: rechecked 2 November 2026

The October 2026 terms and insurance page distinguish credit cards from debit/prepaid cards, even with Max cover:

Card and coverPublished pickup-security treatment
Credit card, most tiersEUR 300 authorisation hold, subject to outstanding charges
Credit card with MaxNo deposit under the published Max exception
Debit/prepaid with Plus or MaxEUR 300 hold
Debit/prepaid with other tiersHold linked to the applicable deductible

The terms describe return of the remaining balance within 30 days once charges are settled; that is not a promise that funds appear immediately at handover. Ask the team to confirm your exact card, cover and available-funds requirement. A generic no-deposit Max description must not be applied to every debit-card booking. Current terms, section 7.5 and insurance/deposit page.

The insurance page calls Max broad cover but still excludes water and underbody damage. Roadside Protection is separately concerned with rescue/callout costs. A zero deductible for covered damage is therefore not permission to cross water, take a closed road or treat every recovery as free. Use the actual agreement and vehicle authorisation rather than a package nickname. Coverage distinctions.

The fresh shuttle page reconfirms winter office pickup 08:00-17:00, no pickup while the office is closed, and separate 24-hour vehicle dropoff. Its stated Christmas/New Year closures and summer 2025 label remain visible. Confirm the booked collection appointment and onward airport journey; after-hours return does not include after-hours shuttle service. Shuttle and closure information.
